After the last pickup

By closing time a daycare has had a full day of use. Crayons have rolled under the tables, snack crumbs ring the chairs, the low windows carry small handprints and sand from the play yard has found its way down the hall. Teachers have already spent the day with the children, and the cleaning should not be waiting for them when the last family leaves.

San Ramon’s childcare programs run in purpose-built centers near residential areas such as Dougherty Valley and Gale Ranch, in suites inside neighborhood retail centers and in rooms within larger community buildings. Once the last car pulls out, the crew starts working through the building room by room, so the center opens the next morning clean and in order. The director picks the cleaning window between closing and the early-morning opening.

Classrooms at child height

Almost everything in a preschool classroom sits low, so the crew works low too. Child-sized tables and chairs are wiped, cubbies and shelf tops cleaned, and the hard surfaces of toy shelves and bins wiped down. Low windows and door glass get the fingerprints taken off, and circle-time rugs and carpeted corners are vacuumed. Coat hooks and the cubby area are wiped, and stray mittens and water bottles go on a shelf for staff to sort.

Paint, glue and play dough leave their marks on art tables, easels and the floor beneath them, and the art sink needs a good scrub at the end of the day. Learning centers, displays and materials on shelves stay exactly where teachers arranged them, and chairs go back to their tables once the floor is done.

Nap rooms and infant rooms

With cots stacked to one side, nap-room floors are vacuumed or mopped wall to wall, and window sills and shelves dusted. In infant and toddler rooms, where the youngest children spend much of the day on the floor, the hard flooring is mopped edge to edge. Diaper-changing counters and the sinks beside them are cleaned and disinfected, and the trash from those rooms is taken out every night.

Small restrooms and handwashing sinks

Children’s restrooms have low toilets, low sinks and step stools, and all of them are scrubbed on every visit. Partitions, faucets, flush handles and the walls around the sinks are wiped, and floors are mopped. Soap, towel and tissue dispensers are refilled with product from our janitorial supplies or from the stock the center buys. Staff restrooms get the same attention, and the handwashing sinks inside classrooms are scrubbed too, with splashes wiped from the wall and mirror beside them.

The snack kitchen, staff room and front lobby

The kitchen where snacks and meals are prepared has its counters and prep surfaces cleaned, food-contact surfaces sanitized, the sink scrubbed and the floor mopped, leaving it ready to use when the morning snack is prepared. The staff room gets tables, the microwave and the refrigerator front wiped.

Parents pass through the lobby twice a day. The sign-in station, the entry door glass, the cubbies by the door and the bench where parents sit are cleaned, and the stroller corner is swept and mopped. The director’s office is dusted around the paperwork, with trash emptied and the floor vacuumed, and the parent bulletin boards and picture frames along the hallway are dusted.

Floors, rugs and the play-yard path

Sand and wood chips from the play yard travel inside on small shoes, so the entry mats and the hallway just inside the door get extra attention. Classroom carpet can have spot treatment and full extraction, and vinyl tile floors can get a full strip and new coats of finish with our commercial floor care. Holiday breaks and closure weeks give those floors days to dry. The walkways and hard surfaces outside the entrance can also be pressure washed.

Who comes into the center at night

A director should know exactly who has keys after hours. Background checks are run on every cleaner before a first shift in your building. Supervisors stop by to run quality inspections, and the director gets a certificate of insurance for the center’s files. We carry insurance, hold a bond and keep workers’ compensation in force for our people. A few useful answers

Common questions

When during the evening is the center cleaned?

After your last pickup, at a time the director sets. The crew finishes and locks up well before the opening teachers arrive.

Will the crew rearrange our classrooms?

No. Learning centers, art displays and materials on shelves stay where teachers put them. The crew cleans around them and slides chairs back to their tables when the floor is done.

Can carpets and floors be done during our closure weeks?

Yes. A winter break, spring break or summer closure week suits carpet extraction and floor refinishing, since the rooms have several days to dry before children return.

Can we add a deeper clean before a new school year starts?

Yes. A one-time visit before the fall term can reach baseboards, vents, light fixtures and high ledges on top of the regular evening list, and the nightly schedule picks up again as usual afterward.
